Are All Scope Mounts The Same?

There are numerous varieties of scope mounts, some of them are fixed, and others are detachable. Both of them have advantages and disadvantages. Fixed scope mounts allow you to keep your scope accurate, even if you knock the rifle a bit.

Whether you bump it or throw it against a rock, the scope will hold zero. The fixed scope mounts are all about reliability and dependability, but you need tools to bolt and unbolt them from your gun.

Another type is the detachable scope mount. Intuitively, these have small quick-detach levers. The mechanism is so easy to use that all you need to do is flip them with your thumb, and you remove the scope instantly. This allows you to switch to iron sights or similar. A good quality detachable scope mounts will return the scope to zero every time you attach it to the rifle, but these models are quite pricey.

There are not many detachable scope mounts available for M1A. Most fixed mounts for M1A have either a universal rail or Picatinny. You may also be able to find separate, quick detach scope rings that come of the rail. However, the scope mount will still be in the way if you choose any other sighting system.

How to Choose a Scope Mount For an M1A

Here is a short guideline on how to choose the best scope mount for your M1A:

Fixed vs. Detachable

There are not many detachable models for M1A, but this is still an important aspect. They are particularly useful if you want to place it on different firearms; otherwise, a fixed scope mount might be exactly what you need. This is mostly down to your specific needs.

Materials

You will find out that one of the most popular and top preferred materials is aluminum. This is because it is durable but lightweight. There are also other materials available for scope mounts, but if you want durability and reliability, you should consider aircraft-grade aluminum.

Rings

Make sure that you check the ring compatibility before choosing the model of the mount. Rings need to match bases, and the waver-style is the most common. Rings play an important role in keeping the mount and scope steady.

Cost

Affordability is important, just as high-quality is. It is always wise to choose a high-quality scope mount that fits within your budget. Set up a price range that will make you comfortable and choose the best product that fits within the range.

Aspects To Consider Before Buying

Purchasing a scope mount should be easier now that you have more insight into the best performing scope mounts of this year. Still, this is not a buy to make on a whim, as it is important to look at a few more aspects before you hit the ‘add to cart’ button.

Budget

If you have a limited budget, you might want to combine the affordability and quality of the product as much as possible. Do not just purchase the cheapest option available to you; instead, it is wiser to set up a budget limit and then consider your best choices. This way, you avoid being disappointed by a subpar scope mount.

Construction

The building materials are extremely important. Most models are aluminum, but there are also scope mounts made of steel or even polymer. These are the best choices for you if you want the scope mount to resist all kinds of weather and abuse. They can handle shock associated with recoil, keeping the aim when you fire.

Installation

Not everyone has gunsmithing skills, so you also need to consider installation requirements. Some are easier to use; others are quite complicated. If you are not so well-versed, you can always go for a model that requires only a few minutes to install with the right tools, that sometimes are included with the scope mount.

How to Install an M1A Scope Mount

Here are some simple steps to attach your M1A scope mount:

  1. Take the stripper clip guide off the dovetail located at the top back of the action by removing the trigger group. Then, separate the stock from the barreled action (check the manual for more instructions).

  2. Hold the barreled action in an upside-down position. Check that the bolt is forward and then, from below, tap the attachment to the stripper clip guide. Tap the guide out from right to left while holding the left-hand side of the action just below the stripper.

  3. Next, you need to de-grease the hole you tapped in the receiver.

  4. If the mount comes with a cam washer, you need to install it using the tap located at 9 o’clock. The screw needs to be hand-started into the receiver. Apply Loctite and tighten the mount with your fingers so that it is held against the receiver’s side. Then turn it slightly (1/8 or less).

  5. If the mount does not have a cam washer, you need to tighten the screw using your fingers, then manually seat the stripper clip dovetail against the rear face of your mount.

  6. Install your dovetail key (once de-greased) into the stripper clip dovetail.

  7. Make sure that the screw hole is aligned and then apply red Loctite.

  8. Next, install the screw and tighten until firm - do not overtighten.

  9. Use a torque wrench to tighten both the side bolt and the dovetail key screw based on the manufacturer’s specifications.

  10. Loosen the Allen-head set screw located at the front of your mount. Tighten the front contact screw until it is very lightly in contact. Do not turn it more than 1/8th past the point of contact.

  11. Lastly, apply red Loctite to the set screw and tighten it.
