They’re also the most popular gun used by American law enforcement.

Glock 101
New to the world of Glocks? Here’s a rundown of the basics:
What is a Glock?
The term “Glock” is commonly used to refer to any of the pistols made by the Austrian firearm manufacturer of the same name. These semi-automatic pistols are owned by millions, where they're primarily used for self-defense and target shooting. They’re also the officially issued firearm for the majority of police departments.
Who Makes Glock?
Gaston Glock and three employees began their business in 1963, where it steadily grew as a manufacturer of military goods, including knives and gun belts. In 1980, their business found massive success, and changed course considerably, with Gaston’s invention of the semi-automatic Glock service pistol. Committed to constant refinement and innovation, they’ve maintained their status as a leader in the firearms industry for decades.
Where are Glocks Made?
Glock is an Austrian company. Their original headquarters remains in Deutsch Wagram, having undergone a significant expansion in 2000. Additionally, they have a second plant in Ferlach, Austria, and a subsidiary location in Slovakia.
Do Glocks Have a Safety?
Generally, most Glocks have a trigger safety system. When you want to fire, you have to depress the trigger completely. The safety prevents accidental trigger pulls, plus it stops accidental firing if the gun is dropped.
Glocks have no manual safety by design. Because they’re meant as self-defense weapons, they don’t have any safety you have to check. Even if you’re startled, you can fire quickly if you need to, but it’s very difficult to shoot accidentally.
How Many Bullets Does a Glock Hold?
Magazine size varies depending on the model. The G17 holds 17 rounds in a standard magazine, while the more compact G19 carries 15. Generally, the most compact the pistol, the fewer rounds it holds. Glock’s most compact firearm, the G42, comes standard with a six-round magazine.
How Accurate is a Glock?
Most popular models are designed for fast firing in relatively close quarters, such as a situation where you’re shooting at someone running towards you.
At 25 yards, a skilled shooter using a Glock 44 can achieve a two-inch grouping on a target. However, in a real-world scenario, an inexperienced shooter has a deadly range of about 75 yards.
Are Glocks a Good Daily Carry?
Absolutely! They’re well-suited for self-defense for a variety of reasons.
First, they’re lightweight and durable. You can carry them in a holster, pocket, or purse comfortably. Glocks are made from a strong, lightweight polymer called Polymer 2, invented by Gaston Glock. It’s more resilient than most steel alloys and resistant to liquids and shock.
Also, they’re easy to use. With minimal recoil, even inexperienced shooters are able to hit close to medium range targets, making the Glock a reliable way to protect yourself.
Finally, they’re safe. The trigger safety prevents accidental misfires, making it a responsible choice for personal carry. Glocks won’t fire even if dropped to the ground or subjected to major physical force.
Review of the Best Glocks
With so many options available, you can find a Glock that fits your needs and shooting experience. Here’s a closer look at several of the most popular models.
(Quick tip! The numbers in the model names refer to patents filed by Glock and have nothing to do with barrel length, caliber, or other specifications.)
Best Overall:
Glock 19 Gen 5 4” 9mm

Pros
Cons
What Recent Buyers Report
As expected for one of the most popular pistols in the world, praise from recent buyers is near-universal. They like its reliability and ease of use. Additionally, many buyers enjoy the different color options.
Why it Stands Out to Us
The G19 Gen 5 is a compact version of the popular G17. It was created at the request of law enforcement, who wanted something more compact and portable. However, beyond the LEO community, a wide variety of folks also turn to the G17 for everyday protection because it’s easy to use and carry, even concealed.
One of the biggest improvements with the Gen5 over previous models is the frame design, which now doesn’t have any finger grooves. Customizing the grip to accommodate your hand size allows for increased security and confidence when firing.
Bottom Line
The Glock 19 Gen 5 is the company’s top-selling compact 9mm – and it’s easy to see why. Even inexperienced shooters find the gun intuitive and comfortable to handle. Precise, lightweight, and durable, it’s an excellent all-around choice.

What Recent Buyers Report
Unsurprisingly, it’s easy to find people who love the Glock 17. Buyers cite its precise construction, simple maintenance needs, and overall quality for the weight and price.
However, you’ll also find a lot of people who own previous generations of this gun and aren’t quite sure if they should upgrade. While the upgraded finish and grip are enticing benefits, many people don’t feel it’s a significant enough improvement over the previous generation to warrant the purchase price.
Why it Stands Out to Us
The G17 is often referred to as the “gun that started it all.” It’s Glock’s quintessential 9mm semi-automatic handgun with a customizable grip, flared mag well for fast reloading, and an enlarged 17 round capacity.
The G17 Gen 5 features a new nDLC finish on the barrel and slide that increases scratch and liquid resistance. It’s their most durable G17 yet.
Additionally, it has multiple safety measures, making it a good choice for home defense and inexperienced gun owners. The Safe Action System uses three separate safeties that automatically re-engage when the trigger is released.
Bottom Line
It’s a tough call between this gun and the G19. Both deliver surefire performance with minimal maintenance needs and a user-friendly design. If you plan to carry your pistol with you, you might prefer the more compact G 19. However, if you want a longer barrel and increased heft, go with the G17.
Best for the Money:
GLOCK G30SF
No products found.
Pros
Cons
What Recent Buyers Report
Most buyers are pleased with their G30SF. It’s commonly referred to as a comfortable gun to hold and fire for long shooting sessions, making it a favorite for target shooters.
The gap between the handle and magazine is mentioned a few times as an odd design choice. However, the issue is fixable by placing sliding a standard O-ring down the base plate.
Why it Stands Out to Us
The Glock G30SF packs a lot of punch in a compact design. Although not quite as powerful as the G17 and 19, the G30SF is better suited for concealed carry. With a total weight of 2.1 pounds and a 3.8” barrel, it’s a popular handgun for undercover officers and plainclothes security.
You can draw, aim, and fire with confidence thanks to the secure grip, which features a textured handle, finger grooves, and front and back straps.
Finally, it offers accurate and reliable aiming. The white dot front and u-shaped rear sights help you draw a bead quickly, even on a moving target.
The Bottom Line
You don’t have to spend big to own a Glock you can count on. The G30SF combines portability and power into an affordable firearm. If you’re looking for the best back for your buck, this is the gun to get.
Best Glock for Concealed Carry:
Glock 43 Single Stack 9mm
No products found.
Pros
Cons
What Recent Buyers Report
Feedback from buyers is overwhelmingly positive. Many people praise the 9mm gun’s small size, which is both easy to conceal and comfortable to wield. It’s also a popular gun for women, teens, and anyone with small hands.
Why it Stands Out to Us
While all Glocks tend to function well as concealed weapons, the G43 is specifically designed for maximum discretion. It’s only 6.26” long with a weight of just 22.36 oz when loaded. When harnessed in a waist or hip holster, it’s barely detectable. Plus, it easily fits into a purse or bag.
The G43 is also an ideal firearm for anyone with small hands. The grip on the gun has an aggressive texture that allows practically anyone to hold onto it without a problem. Even inexperienced shooters, attempting to draw the gun in a hurry, should have no issue handling it safely.
Despite its small size, it has the same durability and reliability you’ll find in every larger Glock model. It resists water, rust, and other hazards. Plus, the Safe Action system helps prevent accidental firing if the gun is dropped or gets hit by blunt force.
The Bottom Line
If you’re interested in a comfortable and undetectable Glock firearm for everyday carry, don’t overlook the G43. Its svelte design fits easily into practically any type of plainclothes holster. Equally important, the beaver-tailed handle with textured grip makes the gun easy to draw and fire.
Smallest Glock:
Glock 42 .380acp (Made in USA)
No products found.
Pros
Cons
What Recent Buyers Report
If you’re buying a G42, you’re interested in a small gun, and buyers generally feel it delivers in that regard. Many owners say the gun is easy to hold. It’s also a popular gun among women, who find that aiming and shooting feels natural.
Why it Stands Out to Us
All Glocks have a precise, compact design – but the G42 takes it to a new (lower) level. It’s Glock’s smallest pistol, made specifically for customers who want the lightest, shortest firearm possible. At just 5.94” long and weighing 17.29 ounces, practically anyone can wield it without issue.
As you might expect from a subcompact, the standard magazine is small, holding only six rounds. However, you can upgrade the mag to something larger, which is also an effective way to make the gun easier to hold if you have large hands.
The Bottom Line
The G42 is Glock’s premier subcompact pistol. It’s sleek, light, and perfect for pocket and concealed carry. While it’s functionally similar to the 43, with the same reliable aiming and solid durability, it’s much smaller. Choose this gun if you want maximum concealability or if you have difficulty holding other guns.
Best Glock 9mm:
Glock 34 MOS
No products found.
Pros
Cons
What Recent Buyers Report
Buyers are happy with the power, speed, and overall value. However, the accuracy does garner some slight negative attention. While no one expresses disapproval of the accuracy, some people say they expected a bit more targeting power from a 9mm with an 8.15” slide.
Why it Stands Out to Us
The Glock 34 MOS is our top recommendation for anyone who wants the stopping power and accuracy of a 9mm. It delivers fast, precise fire, making the gun useful for both home protection and target shooting.
Accuracy is a major feature of this firearm. It has an updated barrel crown with polygonal rifling that’s suitable for high-end target shooting. With a 17-round magazine included standard, you can also upgrade if you want something even larger.
As expected, the 34 Gen5 MOS retains all the features you’d expect from the latest generation of Glocks. The Polymer 2 construction means the gun ends up a manageable 34.57 ounces when loaded.
The Bottom Line
Glock offers several 9mm options, but our overall favorite is the G34 Gen5 MOS. It offers all the newest benefits while retaining the timeless Glock durability and function. With a 5.31” extended barrel and enhanced slide, it’s a top choice for target shooting and defense.
Best Glock for Beginners:
Glock G44 22lr
No products found.
Pros
Cons
What Recent Buyers Report
It’s rare to find the word “perfection” mentioned so often, but buyers use it quite frequently when referring to the Glock G44. Although it’s often used as a training pistol, many experienced shooters said they were impressed by how fun and fast it is to shoot.
Additionally, users mentioned that ammo for the G44 is relatively cheap. It’s a favorite for target practice because you don’t have to spend big to shoot all day.
Why it Stands Out to Us
If you’re buying your first pistol or looking to equip someone who isn’t comfortable (yet) with shooting, consider the Glock G44. It has a streamlined, simple design
The Bottom Line
Although veterans will likely want something larger and more powerful, the G44 is a fun and comfortable way to introduce the basics to a beginner. The .22 caliber pistol has minimal kickback and a Glock Marksman Barrel (GMB) to help enhance accuracy.
Best Glock for Women:
G26 G5 9MM 3.46” 10+1
No products found.
Pros
Cons
What Recent Buyers Report
Buyers generally have no issues comfortably carrying this gun along during daily activities. Many buyers commented that it’s easily concealed under a T-shirt or in a purse. Also, buyers marveled at the light weight.
Why it Stands Out to Us
Nicknamed the Baby Glock, this diminutive but powerful pistol is incredibly popular among women and short-statured shooters. It’s also widely used as a backup weapon by law enforcement and security guards.
Introduced in 1994, the 26 is Glock’s updated take on the classic snub-nosed revolver, the preferred concealed carry weapon for women up to that time. The G26 holds ten rounds with a length of 6.29” and incredibly low weight of 1.25 pounds.
The Bottom Line
The G26 is our top choice for women who want a small, portable pistol they can use only for self-defense. It delivers Glock quality in a miniature package.
What to Look for When Buying a Glock
Regardless of the specific model, most Glocks share a variety of benefits, such as lightweight, damage-resistant construction, and easy handling. However, the differences between models can still be significant. Here are the features to look for when selecting your Glock:
Caliber
Depending on your shooting needs, you might prefer a certain caliber, which is the internal diameter of the barrel. The caliber affects the type of ammo you can use with the pistol. For self-defense, you'll want ammo suitably strong enough to stop a person.
Fortunately, with so many models, Glock pistols have many different caliber options. Some of their most popular pistols are 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45.
Extra Features
If you want a Glock loaded with features, choose options from their fifth-generation production line, Gen5. These models typically feature a nDLC finish for improved durability and a stylish shine. Additionally, the new-gen models also have updated marksman barrels for improved accuracy. They’re also the only generation to remove the finger grooves, allowing for a customized grip.
Intended Purpose
How do you intend to use your Glock? If you’re mainly interested in home defense and personal protection, you’ll want to look at models popular with law enforcement officers, such as the G17 and G19. If you’re interested in target shooting, the 41 Gen 4 Modular Optic System focuses on precision accuracy. Understanding the general purpose of the specific model is a helpful first step when finding the right gun.
Glock Size Chart
Use the chart below to easily compare the different sizes:
Different Types of Glocks
Even experienced gun industry pros can find it hard to keep track of the caliber and size of every Glock model. Here’s a rundown of the different types.
How Many Glocks are There?
Glock makes over 50 different pistols. However, many of these are different generations of the same model. Glock has five generations of pistols, although Gen5 and Gen4 are overwhelmingly the most popular ones sold today.
Gen5 is the newest. These guns have a redesigned grip, a wider handle, and a coating to increase scratch resistance.
While Gen4 models don’t have those features, they’re still popular sellers and often more affordable than Gen5.
Although you won’t find too many for sale, Gen2 is considered the jump into the modern Glock design, making these models popular among collectors.
Glock Models
The Glock 19 (G19) and Glock 17 (G17) are the two most popular models. The G19 is the original Glock, known for its simple, efficient design. As the G19 gained popularity among law enforcement, many officers began asking for a more compact model, which Glock created in the G17.
Other popular options:
- The G37, G38, and G39 are standard and compact .45 options
- G31, G32, and G33 are Glock’s .357 options
- The G17T and G19T are training guns
Glock also offers certain models available only to military and law enforcement personnel. While some have unique features, many are special training and practice pistols. While you might not be eligible for these LEO exclusives, they’re important to be aware of when shopping.
How Do Glocks Compare?
Of course, a Glock isn’t the only option. What are the similarities and differences between Glocks and other major names in guns?
Walther vs Glock
Both the Walther PPQ and Glock 19 are stellar examples of 9mm handguns, but they do have some significant differences. While the Glock holds up as an example of efficient design, the PPQ is far more intricate, making disassembly and cleaning slightly more complicated.
However, the PPQ has a fast-firing trigger pull of 5.6 pounds. Recoil is light with minimal muzzle movement, making it a great choice for smaller-statured shooters.
Sig Sauer vs Glock
For over 25 years, the Swiss-made Sig Sauer was the main handgun of the Navy SEALs. While an accurate and deadly weapon, the Sig Sauer is made from stainless steel. In 2015, the SEALs began using Glock 17s, which are far more resistant to damage from saltwater.
If you’re looking for the most weather-resistant gun, go with the Glock. However, the Sig Sauer is an excellent option for close-range home defense.
Beretta vs Glock
Beretta’s a classic gunmaker with over 400 years of experience, making Glock look like they started last week. However, Glock excels at more modern features like the use of lightweight polymers and the ability to add accessories.
Safety is a key difference. Berettas use an external safety lever, while Glocks have an internal trigger safety system. Although the Glock is easier to fire when you’re surprised, the Beretta is generally considered to have better safety features.
HK vs Glock
While the G19 is the most popular gun among US law enforcement, Heckler & Koch hold impressive records of their outfitting military and police around the world. The HK VP9 is their most direct competitor to the G19.
Both deliver power and accuracy, but the VP9 does fall short for many people because it has a smaller magazine. The standard VP9 mag holds 15 rounds, but many Glocks hold 17, without increased gun weight.
Springfield XD vs Glock
Both the Springfield XD and Glock are polymer-framed pistols favored by military and police around the world. The main difference between the two is weight distribution. The Springfield puts most of its weight in the slide, which makes it feel top-heavy when unloaded, but well-balanced with a full mag.
While they’re fairly evenly matched, the Glock takes the edge with crisper firing, three extra rounds per mag, and a vastly greater array of aftermarket accessories.
Smith and Wesson vs Glock
Smith and Wesson is an American classic founded in 1852. They offer various rifles, revolvers, and semi-automatic pistols. While a classic S&W revolver is drastically different from anything offered by Glock, they’re still powerful home defense weapons.
M&P vs Glock
Smith and Wesson's closest competitor to a Glock 19 or 17 is the M&P 9 2.0. Similar in weight and length, the biggest differences are the M&P’s faster trigger and highly textured grip.
Unlike many other brands, the M&P can compete with the Glock in terms of ammo, with a 17-round magazine. However, Glock 5Gen pistols have superior grip customization and night sights.
How to Disassemble a Glock
Even if you don’t plan to use your gun often, you still want a basic understanding of how to take it apart, so you can clean it and examine internal components for damage. Here's how to disassemble your gun:
1. Release the magazine. Press the rectangular magazine release button located on the handle near the trigger. The magazine will disengage, and you can pull it free.
2. Pull the slide back. Look into the chamber to confirm it’s empty. Once you know the gun is unloaded, you can begin disassembly.
3. Squeeze the trigger once.
4. Press the button above the trigger to release the slide.
5. Locate the two spring-loaded tabs. The slide can now move forward.
6. You’re now ready to remove the striker pin assembly from the slide. Using an awl, push the backplate off to access the striker pin.
7. Next, you’re ready to disassemble the lower frame. Three pins hold it together. Start with the pin above the trigger. Use a mallet and punch to drive it out.
8. The second pin is located above the first. You’ll need to lift the fly stock to access it. It’s not as tense as the first pin, so you’ll likely only need the punch to eject it. (You can also remove the slide stock.)
9. The final pin is located in the rear of the panel. You can knock it out quickly with light pressure.
10. Life up the ejector while pushing up on the trigger to remove the internal block. Your frame is now stripped, and your Glock disassembled.
Want to check out the disassembly process in action? Refer to this video for a complete overview of the steps described above.
How to Clean a Glock
Regular gun cleaning helps ensure accuracy and safe operation. Fortunately, because the Glock is designed for easy stripping and reassembly, keeping it clean is fast and easy. Here’s how:
1. Disassemble the Glock using the method described above.
2. Start with the barrel. Push a dry bore brush forward through the barrel, from the handle side towards the muzzle. You’ll likely see dirt and other debris forced out.
3. Next, you’ll need a gun cleaning patch, which is a lightweight cloth made for firearms. Wrap your patch around the handle of your brush. Then, push the handle through the slide so the patch can remove additional debris.
4. Take another gun cleaning patch and wipe down every part of your gun. Concentrate on the upper components of the gun, as they typically get much dirtier than the interior of the handle.
5. Reassemble your gun following the techniques from earlier.
Glock recommends cleaning your gun after every shooting session, or at least once a month, which is first. Additionally, you’ll want to clean and lubricate it before using it for the first time.
To watch a demonstration of how to clean your Glock, check out this video.
Conclusion
For almost 50 years, Glock has been an industry leader in semi-automatic pistols. They’re welcoming to inexperienced shooters while remaining sophisticated and powerful enough for law enforcement and other professional needs. Simple to maintain with reliable accuracy, they’re an excellent option for target shooting, home defense, and personal protection.

People Also Ask
Glock is a large company with a vast range of models. It can get confusing at times, even to seasoned shooters. Here’s a quick look at the answers to common questions.
What Glock Do Police Use?
Police primarily use the G19, G17, and G22. Initially, law enforcement departments switched to the Glock 19 because it was lighter, sleeker, and held more rounds (15) than the various sidearms LEOs used previously.
As more police departments switched to Glocks, Glock, in turn, began designing weapons for police departments. Eclipsing even the G19 is the G22, the most popular police service pistol in the US. It holds 15 40 S&W rounds while remaining portable and accurate.
Which Glock Holds Most Rounds?
The Glock 22 holds 15 rounds, which is more than any other gun of the same size and weight. However, measuring only by total rounds, optional 33-round magazines are available for many popular Glocks, including the Glock 19.
Do Glocks Ever Jam?
Any firearm has the potential to jam, which is a situation where the ammunition fails to cycle properly. Glocks aren’t known to be particularly problematic in this area, but it can happen. Generally, a weapon’s likelihood of jamming is determined more by how clean it is and what ammo you’re using than due to the specific brand.
Which Glock is Best for Self-Defense?
The G17 and G19 are the two most popular options for personal defense. They’re well-designed to carry on your person because they’re sleek enough to easily conceal and won’t accidentally misfire. However, if you need them, they fire quickly and accurately.
For home defense, the G17 and G19 are also popular for the same reasons. Surprisingly, a much smaller Glock, such as the G42 or G43, can also make an excellent home defense weapon. It’s lightweight and easy to hold and fire, making it a good choice for the elderly or anyone else who might have trouble holding a larger weapon.
How Much is a Glock?
Glocks are generally considered a good value. Although specific prices vary by model, you can get an excellent firearm for around $500. If you want their top-of-the-line models, expect to pay in the low thousands.
When Gen is My Glock?
Most Glocks are either Gen4 and Gen5, both of which have respective generation IDs on the handle. Manufactured from 2010 through today, Gen4 Glocks have finger grooves on the front strap plus thumb rests. Gen5 Glocks don't have finger grooves, but they do have a flared magwell and additional backstraps.
Why are Glocks So Popular?
They're reliable, affordable, and practically anyone can use one. Fast and accurate, they're excellent for self-defense, and they fit well in concealed holsters. It's easy to see why millions of people trust Glock to help them stay safe.
